Geography
Geography at Bradfield CE Primary
Our Geography curriculum aims to inspire our pupils’ curiosity to know about and care for the world around them. Children will explore the physical and human characteristics of their school and local area, the UK, Europe and the wider world and will gain this knowledge through first-hand, practical experiences and fieldwork, where possible.
Geography lessons take place weekly(or as a double session fortnightly) and each year group encounter three different units per year, with a focus on five key questions.
Knowledge through the curriculum builds progressively from close localities (e.g. the school or home) and move increasingly farther away to allow children to build on prior knowledge effectively. Threshold concepts with agreed definitions (e.g. physical processes) are woven through and revisited in the curriculum so that pupils become familiar with them in different contexts.
Fieldwork underpins and supports many units throughout their geography learning at school. Low stakes quizzes also form an important part of the retrieval practice within geography lessons.
Our pupils use their skills gained through geography to understand the everchanging world they live in and to apply their knowledge to other curriculum subjects and to have dynamic ideas for the future. To ensure this we assess children’s understanding of each topic vocabulary before and after the unit is taught, take images and videos of children’s practical learning and interview pupils about their learning.
